Adrián Fernández
Ten years between the posts in Real Madrid's youth academy, four seasons as a starting goalkeeper in NCAA Division I and a degree in Economics from Oregon State University. Adrián Fernández, a goalkeeper from Madrid, is the perfect example of what a soccer scholarship in the United States means: competing at the highest level without giving up a first-class education. Today he guards the goal for RSD Alcalá, but his story runs through Corvallis (Oregon), where he was part of the team that won the first Pac-12 title in the program's history.
The start of the journey: ten years at Real Madrid. Adrián trained for a decade in Real Madrid's youth categories. There he won six league titles, competed in the UEFA Youth League against rivals like Tottenham and was called up by Spain's youth national teams.
When his youth stage ended, the big decision arrived. Instead of looking for a spot in lower divisions with no guarantees, he chose a path that many in Spain still don't know about: studying and playing soccer in the United States. “I'm closing a 10-year chapter in which I've improved and matured as a player and as a person,” he wrote when saying goodbye to the club.
The double bet: Oregon State and NCAA Division I. With the support of Eleven Up Sports, Adrián landed at Oregon State University in 2018, in the Pac-12, one of the most powerful conferences in American college sports. From his first year he was the Beavers' starting goalkeeper wearing number 1: 20 matches and 20 starts as a freshman.
The leap was not simple. “At first it wasn't easy, because I left everything I had in Spain,” he admitted in his farewell. But the college environment gave him what he was looking for: high-performance training, professional facilities and an academic education that culminated in his degree in Economics and the Academic All-District recognition.
2021: Pac-12 champions and Elite Eight. His final season was historic. Oregon State finished 12-2-3 in the regular season and won the first Pac-12 title in its history. Adrián closed the year with 10 clean sheets in 20 matches and was named Pac-12 Player of the Week. The Beavers entered the NCAA tournament as the number 1 seed in the country and reached the Elite Eight (quarterfinals) for the first time, where they fell to Clemson. “Once a Beaver, always a Beaver,” he wrote when saying goodbye to Corvallis.
The return to Spain: from El Ejido to RSD Alcalá. With his college title in hand, Adrián returned to Spain to compete in the Segunda RFEF. He played for Poli El Ejido, UD Alzira (who avoided relegation), AD Unión Adarve (Copa RFEF preseason champion) and Rayo Majadahonda, with whom he played the promotion playoff final to Primera RFEF. Then came CDU Malacitano, a season in which the team goal was met but which was marked by a serious injury. After eight months of recovery, he is now competing again with RSD Alcalá.

Adrián's story holds three lessons. Leaving an elite academy is not the end: the NCAA offers minutes, demanding standards and exposure to goalkeepers with top-level training. A college degree opens doors: Adrián competes in Spain with a degree in Economics that supports him on and off the field. Adaptation takes work: language, distance and a new academic system; with the right support, the first year stops being a leap into the void.
